About Interval
Interval is an independent photography publication built around short stories led by photographs.
Each Interval is a small sequence, typically three photographs, accompanied by only a few words. The images carry the story. The text gives context, but never takes over.
The publication sits somewhere between the speed of the social-media scroll and the slower, more deliberate tradition of the photography blog. It is a place for stories that may be too small to become full documentary essays, but too meaningful to disappear into a feed.
Interval is interested in moments of ordinary and extraordinary life: gestures, encounters, places, transitions and observations made visible through the craft of a photographer.
It does not seek to explain everything, or to take a position on every subject it presents. Its purpose is simpler: to give photography room to work as a documentary medium, and to let small, coherent stories accumulate into a wider portrait of human life.
A small format
Interval stories can be found in everyday life, anywhere in the world.
They do not need to begin as large projects. An Interval might come from a brief encounter, a recurring place, a quiet observation, or a few photographs that suddenly belong together.
Photographers are encouraged to look for these small stories in their own lives and surroundings, or to revisit moments they may already have photographed.
The constraint is deliberate. By working with only a few photographs, the emphasis shifts away from completeness and towards observation, sequence and clarity.
Beyond the stories published here, Interval is intended to promote this way of working: a simpler, more deliberate form of photographic storytelling, capable of saying something about how we live without needing to become a full documentary essay.
For photographers
Interval is an edited publication.
Photographers may be invited to contribute, or may get in touch with a story or an idea they believe fits the format. Work created specifically with Interval in mind is particularly encouraged.
A typical story consists of three photographs, although a sequence may occasionally require slightly more. Text should be kept to what is necessary to place the photographs in context.
Photographers retain copyright to their work. Interval receives only the permission required to publish, archive and promote the story.
Editorial approach
Interval is rooted in documentary photography.
Images may be cropped and adjusted for colour, contrast, exposure and other conventional photographic corrections, but the underlying scene should remain faithful to what was photographed.
Collage, compositing, generative imagery and substantial retouching that alters the documentary content of a photograph are not part of the publication.
Interval deliberately has no likes, comments or public popularity metrics.
It also carries no advertising, sponsored content or commercial placement. The publication is intended to remain focused on the work itself and on the relationship between the photographer, the sequence and the viewer.
Stories are presented as edited sequences rather than as individual images competing for attention. The intention is to give each photographer's work enough space to be experienced as a whole, and for the archive to grow as a continuous collection of photographic observations rather than a feed governed by engagement.
New Intervals are published slowly and deliberately. Over time, a selection of the work published here will also be brought together in an annual printed edition.
